And the Winner Is...

Brother Francis: The Barefoot Saint

How much do you know about Saint Francis of Assisi?  He loved the poor, talked to animals, and founded one of the largest religious orders in the Catholic Church, the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans).  But did you know that he was once a prisoner of war, that this man famous for the love and care he bestowed on lepers early in his life couldn’t stand the sight of them, or that he travelled to the Middle East and risked his life by going deep into Muslim territory to talk to a sultan about Jesus? Well, even if you know all that, did you know that an audio drama about Saint Francis has won the 2018 Audie Award for Best Audio Drama?  Its name is Brother Francis: The Barefoot Saint of Assisi, and it’s yours to listen to on FORMED.

Sponsored by the Audio Publishers Association (APA), the Audies are sometimes called the Oscars of the audiobook industry.  They are the premier awards in the United States recognizing distinction in audiobooks and spoken-word entertainment.  In bestowing the award, the APA said:  “[The] power and passion of one of the world's most popular saints is captured in Brother Francis: The Barefoot Saint of Assisi, an exciting ten-part audio drama from the Augustine Institute Radio Theatre. Dozens of accomplished, award-winning actors bring characters to life, and cinematic sound and music will quicken the imagination. An unforgettable experience that will inspire your heart and stir your soul.”

The Augustine Institute Radio Theatre is an initiative of the Augustine Institute, one of the Catholic organizations that make up the FORMED partnership.  Even if Brother Francis didn’t win an Audie, it would be still be captivating listening.  It’s long, over four hours, so it’s ideal for a road trip.  If you’re just driving around town, seek out traffic jams.
